What you will hear

Lingyun Temple

Explore the historic temple situated near the top of the cliff, which has served as a spiritual anchor for the site since the Tang Dynasty.

Lingyun Temple Main Hall

Inside the quiet sanctuary of the main hall, a gleaming, gilded seated Buddha sits under a canopy of elaborate red drapery. Lingyun Temple has maintained a presence on this clifftop since the Tang Dynasty, serving as a sanctuary for contemplation and devotion. In the early eighth century, a monk named Hai Tong resided here. Troubled by the numerous shipwrecks and lost lives at the turbulent river junction below, he conceived a daring plan in the year 713 AD. He envisioned a massive image of Maitreya Buddha carved directly into the cliffside, believing its divine presence would calm the raging waters and protect passing sailors. Gathering funds through years of persistent begging, Hai Tong initiated the monumental engineering feat that would transform this entire mountain. While the giant statue outside took nearly a century to complete, this temple remained the spiritual nerve center for the massive army of stonecutters and craftsmen who labored on the cliffside below.

Pagoda Incense Burner — Leshan Giant Buddha audio guide stop

Pagoda Incense Burner

In the center of the courtyard stands a bronze incense burner shaped like a traditional multi-tiered pagoda. Elegant dragon motifs wrap around its sturdy base, appearing to climb upward toward the miniature roofs. For generations, visitors have gathered around this vessel to light sticks of incense, placing them inside to smolder. In Buddhist tradition, the rising columns of aromatic smoke physically carry prayers and intentions toward the heavens, drifting away into the sky. The scent of sandalwood and pine often hangs thick in the mountain breeze here, creating a sensory contrast with the crisp, damp river air. This ritual of offering incense serves as a moment of reflection and connection before continuing along the path. As the smoke rises, it connects the solid earth beneath your feet with the vast sky above, mirroring the spiritual aspirations of the pilgrims who have journeyed to this mountain for over a thousand years.

The Giant Head and Ears — Leshan Giant Buddha audio guide stop

The Giant Head and Ears

Looking closely at the head of the colossal figure reveals a masterclass in ancient engineering and design. The hair is adorned with exactly 1,021 spiraled stone curls, individually carved and systematically embedded into the head. Below them, the ears stretch to an astonishing length of seven meters. Unlike the rest of the sandstone body, these elongated ears were crafted from wood covered with clay, then attached securely to the head. Beyond their religious significance, these features serve a highly practical purpose. A hidden drainage system is meticulously integrated behind the ears and between the rows of stone curls. These concealed channels catch rainwater during heavy downpours and steer it away from the face and eyes. By preventing water from pooling or running directly over the delicate features, this sophisticated plumbing system has protected the red sandstone face from severe erosion for more than twelve centuries.

Upper Body and Chest View

Viewing the upper torso from this high vantage point offers a clear look at the immense physical proportions of the carving. The shoulders measure a staggering 28 meters across, wide enough to serve as a platform for dozens of people. Across the chest and collarbones, subtle grooves are visible in the stone. These are not accidental cracks, but rather carefully planned drainage channels carved directly into the red sandstone. This network connects seamlessly with the hidden channels situated higher up on the head and behind the ears. When rain falls, water travels through these interconnected grooves, flowing safely around the chest and down the sides of the body instead of washing directly over the front of the monument. This complex, integrated plumbing system shows that the Tang Dynasty builders understood both structural aesthetics and the long-term preservation challenges posed by the wet, humid climate of Sichuan province.

The Steep Cliffside Descent

Begin the thrilling descent down the narrow, steep pedestrian plank path carved directly into the red sandstone cliff face.

The Nine-Bend Plank Path — Leshan Giant Buddha audio guide stop

The Nine-Bend Plank Path

Descending the cliff face requires navigating the steep, narrow steps of the Nine-Bend Plank Path. Carved directly into the vertical red sandstone rock, this pathway hugs the cliffside, offering a dramatic look at the sheer drop down to the churning river below. Every single step was chiseled by hand. If you look closely at the rock walls bordering the path, you can still see the faint, parallel grooves left behind by the iron pickaxes and chisels of ancient workers. These marks are tangible evidence of the intense physical labor and danger involved in creating this mountain trail. Workers swung heavy tools while suspended on ropes high above the water, slowly carving out a route for pilgrims. Today, the path provides an intimate way to experience the verticality of the mountain, reminding us of the human effort required to shape this entire cliffside over a millennium ago.

Cliffside Guardian Niches — Leshan Giant Buddha audio guide stop

Cliffside Guardian Niches

Surrounding the central monument are dozens of smaller niches, shrines, and guardian figures carved directly into the sandstone cliffs. These secondary works of art depict various Buddhist deities, protectors, and patrons who supported the construction. While the main figure dominates the landscape, these surrounding carvings show that this mountain was once a vast, bustling artistic workshop filled with hundreds of master sculptors and apprentices. Over the centuries, constant exposure to damp river mist and wind has weathered the red sandstone, softening the sharp details of their robes, faces, and weapons. Some of the figures are now barely recognizable, appearing as ghostly shapes emerging from the living rock. Despite this natural decay, the sheer number of these smaller carvings highlights the religious and artistic devotion of the community that gathered here during the Tang Dynasty to transform this wild river junction.

The Towering Upward View

Standing on the stone platform at the very base of the cliff brings you to the climax of this journey. Looking straight up from the giant feet toward the distant face reveals the true, staggering scale of this monument. The figure stands 71 meters tall, a height roughly equivalent to a modern ten-story building. From this perspective, the sheer verticality of the red sandstone cliffs feels overwhelming, and human onlookers appear incredibly small beside the massive stone legs and torso. The head rises high against the sky, often partially framed by green foliage at the cliff's edge. This dramatic low-angle view was designed to inspire awe, emphasizing the immense scale of the Buddhist cosmos. It represents the pinnacle of Tang Dynasty stone carving, where a whole mountain was reshaped to create a serene presence overlooking the turbulent waters below.

The Giant Toes — Leshan Giant Buddha audio guide stop

The Giant Toes

At the very bottom of the cliff, the colossal feet rest quietly near the edge of the water. To understand the scale of these feet, consider that even the smallest toenail is large enough for an adult to sit on comfortably. The massive insteps and thick toes are shaped with simple, sturdy lines, designed to support the immense weight of the seated figure above. These feet serve as a physical barrier where the sacred mountain meets the wild, rushing rivers. Positioned at the base of Mount Lingyun, they anchor the statue firmly against the currents that flow past. By placing the feet at river level, the ancient builders created a direct connection between the giant carving and the natural elements it was meant to tame. The contrast between the unyielding, moss-speckled stone of the toes and the fluid, moving water highlights the enduring nature of this monument.

Cliffside Viewing Platform — Leshan Giant Buddha audio guide stop

Cliffside Viewing Platform

Completing this colossal undertaking required immense patience, taking 91 years of continuous labor from 713 AD to 803 AD. The project faced many financial and political hurdles, leading to one of the region's most famous historical legends. When corrupt local government officials attempted to extort the funds that Monk Hai Tong had painstakingly collected for construction, the monk confronted them. He declared that the officials could have his eyes, but not the money destined for the Buddha. To prove his absolute devotion and protect the sacred treasury, Hai Tong gouged out his own eyes on the spot. Terrified and humbled by his extreme sacrifice, the officials fled, and the funding was preserved. Though Hai Tong passed away before seeing the statue completed, his dramatic act of self-sacrifice ensured that the work continued, eventually drawing imperial support to finally finish the monument decades later.

River Confluence Panorama — Leshan Giant Buddha audio guide stop

River Confluence Panorama

From this scenic vantage point, you can look out over the wide confluence where the Min, Qingyi, and Dadu rivers meet. Before the eighth century, this junction was notorious for its violent eddies and unpredictable currents, which regularly sank shipping vessels and claimed the lives of local boatmen. While Monk Hai Tong's goal was spiritual, his plan succeeded due to a fascinating scientific byproduct of the construction. Over nearly a century of carving, workers chiseled millions of tons of red sandstone directly out of the mountain. This massive volume of excavated stone was systematically dumped into the deep river beds directly below the cliff. Over decades, this accumulated debris filled the deep underwater channels, altered the flow of the currents, and permanently changed the riverbed. By restructuring the riverbed, the project successfully calmed the turbulent waters, making the dangerous confluence safe for passing ships.
