An ancient courtyard in the heart of Sofia

Meet Saint George Rotunda: a small red-brick building with a much longer story than its surroundings suggest.

Some places announce themselves from a skyline. Others ask you to step into a courtyard. Saint George Rotunda belongs to the second kind: a compact red-brick building surrounded by a city that has continued to grow around it.

A place to read in layers

Sofia Municipality dates the building to an early fourth-century complex from the reign of Constantine the Great. Its account describes the rotunda as the city’s oldest well-preserved Roman construction.

That is a useful starting point, but you can begin with what is in front of you: the curve of the brickwork, the building’s scale and its relationship with the surrounding remains. Look at how the different parts of the courtyard fit together before trying to place everything on a timeline.

Why small places reward attention

A compact site lets you hold more of the scene in view at once. Compare the shape of the rotunda with the lines of the modern buildings around it. The contrast makes the passage of time easier to picture than a date alone.

Our reason for highlighting this place is that contrast. It offers a way into Sofia’s history through a single building, without asking you to treat the city as a list of sights to finish.

Before you stop by

Use the city’s official visitor information to confirm access before making a special journey. As with any religious site, follow the guidance on the day, respect services and check before photographing the interior.

Give the courtyard a little attention too. A useful question to take away is how a city preserves older places while continuing to live around them. You can carry that question into the rest of your walk through Sofia.
